In 2271, promoted to lieutenant and assigned as  Enterprise security chief.  Served in that role during V'Ger crisis. Remained aboard Starship Enterprise during its second five-year mission of exploration under Kirk. Promoted to lieutenant commander, 2276.
In 2277, promoted to commander, transferred to U.S.S Reliant as first officer under Captain Clark Terrell,  following retirement of Enterprise from exploratory service.
Served aboard Reliant on open-ended exploration missions, 2277-85. Helped direct Reliant's efforts in assisting Project Genesis to locate a lifeless planetoid on which to test the device.  Reliant subsequently destroyed by Khan Noonien Singh in Mutara Nebula, 2285.
In 2285, assisted Admiral  Kirk in theft of  Enterprise from spacedock. Subsequently fled with Kirk and crewmates to planet Vulcan; remained in exile on Vulcan until 2286. Returned with shipmates in stolen Klingon Bird-of-Prey, and participated in time-travel mission to rescue Earth from alien probe of unknown origin. Helped Commander Uhura steal high-energy photons from nuclear reactor of 20th-century military ocean vessel U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65. Seriously injured trying to escape from the sea vessel; rescued from 20th-century hospital by Kirk, Dr. Leonard McCoy, and 20th-century Dr. Gillian Taylor. Chekov cleared of all charges and returned to active duty by the Federation Council, 2286.
In 2293, transferred at request of Captains Kirk and Spock to U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A, as navigator, for diplomatic mission to escort Klingon Chancellor Gorkon and his entourage to Earth for peace negotiations.  Assisted in thwarting of assassination attempt  of Federation President at Khitomer. 
Later that year, attended maiden voyage of U.S.S Enterprise-B.  Trip was interrupted for a rescue mission; Chekov organized civilians into emergency medical teams because Enterprise-B's medical staff was not yet assigned.
